How Satellites Make This Work
The FLDAS project aims to effectively use limited available hydroclimatic observations for routine use for FEWS NET decision support. FLDAS (McNally et al. 2017) is a custom instance of the NASA Land Information System (LIS), which allows FEWS NET to leverage existing land surface models and generate ensembles of soil moisture, ET, and other variables based on multiple meteorological inputs or land surface models. FLDAS uses a combination of the Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications version 2 (MERRA-2) data and Climate Hazards Group InfraRed Precipitation with Station data (CHIRPS) (Funk et al., 2015).
